Gherkin and Church by samurai23 Gherkin and Church by samurai23
This is the first instalment of an occasional series I've been contemplating for a while of the iconic buildings of London.
I really like this one because it is a great example of what I love about London. The juxtaposition of extremely diverse architectural styles & eras.
:)
The one that looks like a spaceship is the Swiss Re Tower, designed by Sir Norman Foster & affectionately nicknamed 'The Gherkin'.

I really like the angle you've used in this shot; it makes it feel as though the buildings are towering over you.
I love the contrast between the new and old buildings, too - I doubt I'd have thought of taking a photo'. You have a good eye.

The only thing I don't like is that little road sign near the bottom...I know there's nothing you could have done about it, but it interrupts the picture. =P

Other than that, this is very good, and a unique shot. =D

I know what you mean about the sign. At first I was really annoyed about it, but I've warmed to it over time. I kind of like the way the arrow on it points the eye of the viewer up to the buildings above. :)

Thank you for your kind words, much appreciated. :)

Great photo, and what you said is something I like about Manchester too, the mixture of historic and contemporary buildings. This photo looks rather surreal. :) Nice.

Yeah, it's a thing that I've only ever seen in British cities really. In other places, they'll knock down the old stuff before building new stuff, but here we just throw them all up together. Makes for good photos though. :)

Eek. :o I've been there before... I've seen that building... and that church.... and as for the Gherkin.... this is beside the point, but why did they decide to erect a phallic-shaped building in the middle of London?

Sorry about that. It's just vaguely odd when you see places you see regularly being photographed. Anyway, this is a stunning shot. The contrast between the three buildings is so unbelievable that I'd think it was a photomanip if I hadn't seen them before. Nice lighting and contrast (although I suppose it was mostly spontaneous =) ) and I like the different textures in the shot. Really nicely done. I must get my cam out more.....

It is freaky when you see stuff you know on here. A little while ago I was looking at some Portuguese guy's stuff & suddenly there was a picture of the street around the corner from where I work in Soho! I was like 'woah, that's weird!'!

That gherkin is an unbelievebly phallic building isn't it, & you can see it from miles around to, must be some subconcious relationship between big buisiness men & power or something! Maybe they feel they can make up for having small ones if they work in a big one!

I remember the spaceship. I always thought of it as a bullet, but really, it's a UFO. I dig the juxtaposition (perfect description by the way! modern vs semi ancient)
